Arizona Dranes was born blind probably in the year in Sherman, Texas. She was billed as Dranes and due to the illiterateness and accent of her parents the name was spelled how it was pronounced. After graduating the Institute in Texas she returned to her home for the next ten years. She attended the Church of God in Christ and played the piano. Her shouting and playing were so inspiring that only nearing the age of 20, did a minister recommend her to a talent scout from Okeh records.

Arizona Dranes is credited by some experts to have invented the "barrelhouse," ragtime-derived style of gospel accompaniment, and at this point in time there is no known evidence to the contrary.
